About the Cape Cod Canal

Join your AFE colleagues for an exciting tour.  Opening to vessel traffic in 1914, the primary purpose of the Cape Cod Canal is to provide a safe, navigable intra-coastal route for vessels, saving 65-166  miles of coastal travel around the tip of Cape Cod. Since 1928 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has operated and maintained the Cape Cod Canal as a toll-free waterway.

About the Tour

The tour will focus on Cape Cod Canal's Operations and Maintenance with a focus on Marine Traffic Control and Marine Operations. It will consist of two parts:
- a PowerPoint presentation by Sean McDonald in the Ranger Station Theater
- a tour of the Marine Traffic Control Center by our Marine Traffic Controllers on duty
Additional assistance will be provided by Park Ranger Andrew Fino.

Getting There

Our contacts on Cape Cod report they are "under siege" due to the Sagamore Bridge closing down to one lane each way.  This also impacts Belmont Circle on the other end of the Canal (Bourne Bridge/Buzzards Bay).  They recommend folks either come down Route 24/495/25, or if they take Route 3 from Boston/Plymouth (South Shore/Plymouth), that they plan to take Exit 2 -- take Herring Pond Rd/Bournedale Road/Head of the Bay Road into Buzzards Bay -- then proceed to MMA.

They also report there is now a "MMA Satellite Parking Lot" adjacent to the Cape Cod Canal Ops Center on Academy Drive, and it should not be an issue to park after 4 PM.  This is a one minute walk to the Ops Center.
