About the John Hancock Tower

The John Hancock Tower remains one of Boston’s premiere landmarks and the most iconic pieces of Boston real estate. It was built in 1976 and designed by I.M. Pei Associates as a glass wall to reflect its surroundings such as the trinity Church. Early on the building experienced issues with the windows that kept breaking and replaced with plywood until the cause could be determined. The building also had a structural defect that allowed too much sway. Structural supports and large mass dampers were installed and the windows were all replaced with single ply windowpanes.

The building was not known as the most energy efficient structure and recently Boston Properties with C&W Services have been working to upgrade and improve the building energy efficiency. The engineering staff who are hosting tonight’s tour will discuss the initiatives in controls and other areas as well as the bench marking and retro commissioning that have led to millions of dollars in annual savings. We will have a presentation on the 47th (white box) unoccupied floor and tour some of the mechanical spaces where the upgrades have taken place.
